An Expert Guide: How To Bake Your Face

Discover everything you need to know from product recommendations to top tips, helping you to start baking like a pro!

‘Baking’ is a viral trend that has blown up in the makeup community over the past few years, and has stood the test of time.

Originally prominent in the drag community, baking involves placing setting powder on the face and leaving it to sit until the warmth of your face sets the base makeup. Sometimes leaving a pigment or simply setting and removing any excess oils leaving it the same colour.

Once dusted off, you enjoy a perfectly flawless makeup base that lasts all night long. To put it simply, baking = less touch-ups and creasing, what’s not to love?

Our Best Baking Powder

So, what are the best baking powders to achieve the most seamless, crease-free base? I’m here to guide you through our bestselling baking product that provides that flawless makeup look you’ve been waiting for.

This powder is the perfect companion to help banish shine, boost brightness and balance your skin tone.

Makeup Revolution Loose Baking Powder

First up, we have the   Makeup Revolution Loose Baking Powder. It’s fair to say this product was one of the leaders of the baking powder phenomenon. After incredible amounts of support for this product, we’ve released seven new, amazing shades to be enjoyed by all skin types.

The finely milled, talc free power of this product is unmatched in terms of its beautiful brightening ability and silky-smooth application.

If you don’t want to add any extra colour to your makeup, choose  Makeup Revolution Loose Baking Powder Translucent. A translucent powder offers a more lightweight option that still keeps your makeup looking flawless! Keeping your make up the exact same apart from adding longevity by banishing any shine and preventing any creases.

How to Bake Your Face Step-By-Step

Now time for the tutorial you’ve been waiting for! Follow along with this step-by-step baking powder makeup tutorial to enjoy your smoothest base yet!

Step 1 – Hydrate the Skin

First things first, moisturising is key, especially if you have dry skin! This will help soften any texture and allow for a smooth application.

Be sure to focus on the under eye area as this will take the most product. I would recommend the  Revolution Pro Miracle Cream and  Revolution Pro Miracle Eye Cream for the best hydration no matter your skin type.

Expert Tip: Don’t skip out on this step if you have oily skin, it’s essential that all skin types are hydrated to avoid excess oil production.

Step 2 – Apply your foundation

Now, if you want to bake your makeup like a pro, layering is key!

Layering your baking makeup can be daunting but will give you that flawless, matte finish you’ve always been wanting. But to do this the right products are so important! A buildable, foundation like the  Skin Silk Serum Foundation is going to be essential to set you off on the right foot.

Oh and there’s no need to worry about that cakey look if you’ve got our  Makeup Revolution Create Blending Sponge on hand! Blending and building up your foundation coverage has never been so easy, and in a few short minutes you’ll have the flawless finish of dreams.

If you’re not a makeup sponge convert yet, you soon will be!

Step 3 – Conceal

Next up, apply the concealer on areas you’d like more full coverage. A creamy, easy-to-blend concealer works a treat.

We have just the product, the  MAKEUP REVOLUTION CONCEAL & DEFINE CONCEALER which provides the ultimate brightening, contoured effect.

For the best application, apply the concealer with a dampened beauty sponge, such as the  Makeup Revolution Create Blending Sponge again.

Expert Tip: For under the eyes, aim to draw an upside-down triangular shape, pulling this upwards to your temples, to give you a gorgeous lift.

Once applied, wait for the product to settle on the skin to prepare for setting.

Step 4 – Ready, set, BAKE!

Now, it’s time to start applying the powder ready for baking.

Expert Tip:  For a light coverage look, simply dust powder over your concealed areas, wait two minutes to set and dust off.

If you want to go all out with your baking powder, listen up!

- Firstly, tip some of the powder out on to the back of your hand or a clean flat surface.

- Using your  Makeup Revolution IRL Soft Focus Powder Puff: Tap a generous amount to the tip of the puff and swipe a layer of powder under the eyes, on smile lines, t-zone, chin, jawline, and central forehead. Tap the puff in small increments as you go to ensure even distribution of the powder.

- Then press the product under your eyes with the point of the puff pointing towards the inner corner of your eye. The idea is to layer the product so you can see the powder that you have applied.

- If you prefer using a sponge, we recommend the  Makeup Revolution Create Blending Sponge especially for setting and baking with a flat edge. Dampen sponge to pick up more product and lay more precisely.

- Now wait a 5-10 minutes! (Whilst you’re waiting for your powder to set, you can always fill in your brows)

- Finally using a fluffy brush like our  Makeup Revolution Create Soft Focus Brush R6 gently dust away the excess!

Expert Tip:The longer you leave it to set or in the proper terms “bake” the more pigment will be left behind!

Expert Tip:Exactly like Omotola (above) you can place your baking powder no only under your eyes but also anywhere you wish to brighten and/or set!

Step 5 – Add the Finishing Touches
